“Adam ate the apple, and our teeth still ache.” -Hungarian proverb. The story of Adam and Eve has been depicted in numerous artworks from classical antiquity to previous day. In the Garden of Eden, Adam was directly forbidden to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. However after Eve was created a serpent tempted her to eat the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, she then gave also gave the fruit to Adam. The imagery of an apple and snake still holds the concept behind this sinful story. (still life)

This contemporary take on Victorian era fashion is modeled by Katelyn Kelly. A shear lace fitted blouse is paired with gold accessories. In addition, chunky beaded nail art and gold glittered makeup turn this conservative’s era’s look into modern day fashion. (fashion)

Connecticut junior, Jenna Green, an Apparel Merchandising major, playfully blows a bubble while wearing a nostalgic floral headband and a string of retro pearls. Green received an opportunity to spend a weekend at the popular fashion magazine "Teen Vogue" in New York. “I called my mom right and practically screamed into the phone. I was ecstatic,” said Green. Mount Pleasant Elementary Education senior, Katelyn Kelly, holds her 3 pet rats Watson (gray), Oreo (black and white) and Peanut (not pictured). Kelly used to own 14 rats: 3 males, 1 female and then 9 Babies, before giving away all but 3. It began when Kelly visited a PetSmart this past summer. “There are always so many cute rats in the feeder tank, and for $3 a piece there's no way I could let them suffer the snake food fate,” said Kelly. “They make really great and easy pets. They cuddle, learn tricks and all the other things pets do. Everyone always asks why I like rats; the same reason anyone likes cats or dogs or whatever their preference may be, they're just cool pets.” (studio portrait)

three strobes were used in this shot off to camera left, was an umbrella-ed strobe off to camera front/ride was two other strobes.

In collaboration with Fashion Merchandising senior, Ashley Guza, we got together a bunch of friends consisting of models, hair/makeup, light stand holders, etc.. to put together a large production fashion shoot. We got together all of the girls by the river to get a shot together. Never realized how difficult it was to organize that many people in front of the camera at once, and then to get my behind the scenes people to stop cracking jokes long enough to get the shot. the chair, 10 dollars at Goodwill.

The Hunt for this Season's Top Fashion

This fall's top items to add to your wardrobe: leather and animal prints. Model Katelyn Kelly wears a thrifted cheetah-print blouse paired with a black Forever 21 leather mini skirt and a jeweled NY Boutique bra. This looked was styled by Ashley Guza, a senior Apparel Merchandising and Design major at Central Michigan University.

This shot was created using 2 strobes near the bank of the river, one to camera right and the other directly behind the camera in this shot. I used the strobe to get a nice crisp still shot in the fading evening light, trying not to over do the lighting, keeping things more natural. Later in Photoshop i added the 'reticle'. which is the measured view you get when looking through a scope of a gun. i also burned and blurred the image around the target, then dodged and sharpened in the center to get more of a scoped look.

set this shot up to shoot straight forward with strobe on right as the main light and left strobe off to the side, but then i moved to get the shot with grassy things in it and the strobe left strobe ended up beind basically above camera pointed at model.

This image is created using 3 photographs. One of zombie Sean, another with Ken holding the wire key and the third was a close up of the can. Orginally we were going to replace Ken completely with the can (hence why his face is covered with a hood- to make PSing him out easier later), but then in post processing we decided to make him the 'monster' who is about to wind up zombie Sean.

The post processing of these images in PS can really be credited to Kathleen, the PS quick key super star, she was able to merge 3 photos and blend the background to look as if it was all one canvas.

Improv campus studio set up with team Ben and Ken, originally we headed to wightman to find someone doing something interesting, but oddly enough no one was around- mondaysss blah. We tried to stop this kid riding backwards on his bike while smoking or chewing on a pen (couldn't really tell which) but clearly he doesn't respond to "hey kid, stop !". When all else failed we decided to set up an improv studio in the shady wooded spot by the pond. Joe Barone came walking through and ever so kindly decided to be our model for the next 2 hours, we made him do like 30 handstands, kart wheels, climb trees, inhale chalk dust etc..

equipment: 3 strobes, 1 umbrella, 1 light stand, 1 reflector, 4 receivers

Mr. Andrew Malcolm Dooley enjoys eating shoots and leaves. When he is not pretending to be a panda bear, Dooley is a normal college student with a creative imagination, making the best out of what life hands him.

Had some fun times in the studio with dooley. used one main diffused light source on the front right, a bounced light on the front far left, then a snooted light in the back left. i wanted a nice overall bright white light to allow dooley to kind of use the white space as his stage.

Last Monday I had some fun studio time with the jrn420 class, we all brought costumes in and had some fun both behind the camera and in front. Here's Ken in a very creepy forest-monster type outfit. I did have some slight issues with lens flare on his mask, but I did manage to get some nice shadows over his right eye from the main light and lit it to get an expression in his eye. My favorite shot though, was a full body wide shot that showed the full overwhelming costume.

Alternative Healing

May is mental health awareness month. There is much more to mental health than disorders and pharmaceuticals. Many people, even of western culture, practice alternative healing for the mind, body and spirit.

Alternative healing is any practice that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine. People that exercise these alternative practices are healers. They can facilitate and guide others into a state of relaxation, understanding and clarity.

Durinda Long is a healer, but not in the ways most would think. Long is a reiki master, a psychic reader, specializing in psychic medium, aura, and angel card readings. Ever sense Long was four, she had a feeling that something was different about her. She had a strong instinct about events and people.

“I saw these ghosts that were there that other people didn’t see and I thought I was sort of crazy. So you know, then once I understood what was going on it made more sense,” said Long.

Over time, Long developed her gift. She used to have to hide her psychic abilities in her corporate job, when Long was laid off she took the opportunity to do something more with her gift. In September 2009, Durinda and husband, Brian Long, opened up their alternative healing store, Celtic Moon in Midland, Mich. Durinda and Brain do daily psychic readings for those seeking insight.

“It is very healing because it’s like when people come in they have this tragedy that happened to them, you know, you can kind of tell them about the light that’s coming after that.

These women that come in and they have these breakups, like their husband left them and all this stuff, and you can see the future of a lover that’s going to be better than what they had. That gives them hope.

It’s interesting how they leave feeling kind of better about themselves. That’s all you can do. Life is full of surprises, you just have to know it’s coming,” said Long.

Jessica Stefani is Reiki Master. Reiki is a form of alternative healing that combines mediation and prayer. The practice originated from Japan; translated reiki means universal, life, energy from God.

“It is about love and just unconditional desire to help each other,” said Stefani.

Stefani has been practicing Reiki for eight years, five of which she spent studying relaxation and meditation to become a certified reiki master.

“I’ve always really liked helping people, but I’ve never felt a calling to go into anything like medicine or psychiatry. A lot of the times my helping was more for doing a massage and/or cooking somebody a good meal,” said Stefani

Stefani amounts her beliefs to the environment in which she grew up where they were aware of things like energy. As a reiki master you try to help the person reach his or her own meditative point. Reiki is essentially an intense prayer session.

“It is about making a connection with another person, and you’re both experiencing this unconditional love at the same time,” said Stefani.

“There’s such a negative stigma on [reiki]… I think if people, even despite their religious differences… could just open them selves up to this energy- I think a lot of people could benefit,” said Stefani.

Kevin and Theresa Mull, Plymouth, Mich. take the icy plunge every winter in support of Special Olympics. Theresa plunged for her fourth year at the Moose Lodge in Belleville, Mich. February 13, 2010. Kevin and Theresa not only help raise money, but they also coach a softball team for Special Olympics. Many of their friends, family and athletes, including Theresa’s brother Peter, came out to the plunge to show their support for their coaches and the Special Olympics.

When Rex Kogler was laid off from his job at John Deer in Grand Rapids he saw this as a new opportunity in his life. "Do something you love and stay with it. Because that, is worth more than any amount of money you can buy." Alongside his wife Terri, the Kogler's began their Native American jewelery company, End of the Trail. They work out of their Grand Rapids home, where Rex has a small jewelry studio to design, create, fix and resize Native American style jewelry. "This is my past time and it kind of started out as a hobby, but now it's become more of a good running bussiness." They travel to different Pow Wows across the country to sell and promote their company.
